When it refers to J.B. and Kevin McKathan "born horsemen" is more than just an expression. The McKathan brothers' lives have always revolved around horses. Their father, J.B. "Luke" McKathan, is a lifelong horseman who has plied his trade in every facet of the business.
By the time the McKathan brothers graduated from high school, they had a lifetime of experience in the horse business. At 18, J.B. got his trainer's license and took over his father's clients. Based at River Downs in Ohio, he was the track's leading trainer at the age of 20 and had saddled stakes winners Minnieoso and Monsieur Champlain . Two years later, after high school graduation, Kevin would also acquire his trainer's license.
In 1988, the McKathan brothers gave up the racetrack circuit life to settle in Ocala establishing the original McKathan Brothers operation.
Having established themselves as successful pinhookers/consignors, the lives of the McKathan brothers changed dramatically in 1996. Acting on behalf of trainer Bob Baffert, they negotiated the $85,000 private purchase of a colt by Silver Buck out of Bonnie's Poker, by Poker, following the OBS April juvenile sale. That colt, raced by Robert and Beverly Lewis, was named Silver Charm and would go on to win the 1997 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1.) He would just miss sweeping the Triple Crown with a second in the Belmont Stakes (G1.)
By the time Silver Charm was retired, he had been named the 1997 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, won 11 stakes and banked $6,944,369.
Incredibly, the McKathans would make a return appearance to the Kentucky Derby winner's circle in 1998. At the 1996 Keeneland September yearling sale, the McKathans collaborated with Baffert on the $17,000 purchase of a yearling by Quiet American out of Really Blue, by Believe It. Raced by Mike Pegram, the colt named Real Quiet won the 1998 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and was second in the Belmont Stakes.
Real Quiet was named the 1998 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, won five grade-one stakes and retired with earnings of $3,271,802.
Two more champions, Silverbulletday and Chilukki , have been added to the roster of McKathan Brothers success stories. Other outstanding horses that have gone through the McKathan Brothers program include winner of the $6,000,000.00 Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) Captain Steve, Prime Timber, Exploit, Forestry, Hookedonafeelin, Forest Camp, National Saint, Handpainted, Icecoldbeeratreds, Straight Man and Congaree.
